How to Use This Calculator

Revenue per job: Enter the total amount you charge the customer for a typical job. Include all line items -- service fees, parts, labor, and any surcharges.

Total costs: Add up everything it costs you to complete that job: materials/parts, technician labor (hourly rate x time), vehicle costs, and a share of your monthly overhead (rent, insurance, software, etc.).

Profit margin vs. markup: Margin is your profit as a percentage of revenue. Markup is your profit as a percentage of cost. They are different numbers! A 50% margin = 100% markup.

Tips for Improving Profit Margins

  • 1.

Track your actual time on each job -- most service businesses underestimate labor costs by 15-25%.

  • 2.

Review your pricing every 6 months. Material and fuel costs change, and your prices should too.

  • 3.

Offer maintenance plans -- recurring revenue has higher margins than one-time repairs.

  • 4.

Reduce drive time by clustering jobs geographically. GetTimePad's smart scheduling does this automatically.

  • 5.

Train technicians to present upgrade options -- a $500 upsell on a job you are already at costs almost nothing in extra overhead.

  • 6.

Track profitability per service type. You may find some services are losing money and need price adjustments.

GetTimePad tracks all this automatically.

Real-time profitability tracking, automated invoicing, and business insights -- all built into your field service workflow.
